Mac OS X has so many places where I can put fonts. Where are they all located? |
In addition to your own font collection, Mac OS X manages fonts that reside in various locations on your computer's hard drive.
For a font to be available to software applications, it must be loaded into memory. Mac OS X loads fonts residing in any of the folders that appear below into memory when you start your computer. /Library /Fonts/ Fonts in this folder are available to all users who log onto the computer. You will find dfonts in this folder. /Users/<user>/Library/Fonts/ Fonts in this folder are only available if <user> is logged in. /System/Library/Fonts/ These are the core System fonts and you should not alter or move them. You will find dfonts in this folder. /System Folder/Fonts/ If Mac OS Classic is installed, fonts in this folder are available to users running Classic. ~Network/Library/ Fonts If you are using a network home directory, you will also have fonts located on another computer on the network. Unless you are sharing fonts across the network, you can ignore this folder. You might find dfonts in this folder. /Library/Application Support/<vendor>/Fonts These fonts in the Application Support folder are active only in specific applications, such as those from Adobe. Note: Various software vendors store fonts for their applications in this folder. Moving some or all of these fonts can cause problems. /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS/Fonts/ Fonts in this folder are available only to Adobe InDesign CS documents. Note: This is an example of fonts located inside a fonts folder within the Application folder itself. Other Adobe products as well as Microsoft Office applications also have a Fonts folder somewhere within their Application folder. |
